At a recent Biotech event for job hunters, experts on The Job Forum speaker discussion panel discussed three entry level pathways in job roles that sound very interesting for those who want to get started in the field of Biotechnology. These are excellent first steps for college grads. Once you start in any one of these, it can lead to any other job function you want to work in within mid-size or large size biotech companies.
The 3 roles:
CRA: a clinical research assistant who helps with clinical trials by recruiting patients to participate, managing study documentation, collecting the data that helps track results, and ensuring the smooth operation of a clinical study which is used to evaluate the safety and positive impact of any therapy or medical device being tested to be approved for use.
Skills needed include effective organizational skills, independent follow-through, project management capability, excellent communications, basic scientific knowledge and willingness to learn science and medical terminology.

CLS: Clinical Lab Scientist (also known as a Medical Laboratory Scientist) analyzes a variety of biological samples to determine if they meet certain criteria. These relate to decisions to help diagnose or treat disease. The job may focus on hematology, chemistry, blood bank or microbiology They make sure the quality of the test results is consistent, they operate lab equipment, they analyze body fluids or samples, and they may evaluate new test methods. They have one year of paid internship training and get a certificate.
Skills needed are multi -tasking, ability to work in a fast-paced environment, attention to detail, interest in biology and chemistry, organizational capabilities
