Gain Traction In Your Job Search by Working With A Staffing Company Event
Wondered how staffing agencies or executive search firms function and how job seekers can benefit in today’s job climate? In early January, The Job Forum hosted an event over Zoom designed to share valuable insights on staffing, recruiting, and executive search firms. We were thrilled to have seven professionals join and share pointers. As layoffs continue to impact the post-Covid world, it’s paramount to learn that these industry experts are here to positively advocate on your behalf.
Let’s Define Key Terms
In order to understand the nature of the staff recruiting industry, it’s necessary for me to iron out some definitions. A staffing agency is structured to advise and help a company plan for future hiring of employees. They will vet, communicate, and follow through with job hunters before recommending them to a particular organization. In the simplest terms, they are deciding what value a prospective hire is adding to a company currently lacking the internal workforce to actively recruit. This means a professional often assists the internal recruiting team by making connections between their selected candidates and the company’s hiring managers. Staffing recruiters often receive their pay through a percentage placement fee based upon job description and the annual salary of a role. Executive search recruiters have roles and a client needs that function a bit differently. They team up with a CEO to get a pulse on an organization’s need to fill senior-level or leadership roles. Please reach out to any of the staffing experts for further clarifications!
How to Target a Staffing Professional
It’s a good idea to follow a few pertinent steps if interested in working with a staffing agency. Faz Massir recommends that you seek out a staffing professional who is an industry-wide match. We all know how the spray and pray approach leads to job search fatigue! Carol Wentworth, an expert in the executive search space, advises doubling down on Linkedin’s search function. Whether one is looking to work in Marin County, determine the top 10 staffing firms in the Bay Area, or uncover temp work, filter appropriately. Widening that proverbial fishing net is crucial, but be sure to respect the time of staffing recruiters during the service inquiry stages.
Some Do’s and Don’ts
To make a slam dunk with a staffing agency, here’s what to try and what to skip:
👍Short and to the point when connecting in an opening Linkedin message
👍Specific when sharing interests and career goals
👍Pursue temp/project work in order to gain new skills and company loyalty
👎Avoid stating commute or vacation policy are reasons for prospective interest
👎Don’t slander previous employer to other professionals
👎Reason you need work is to pay rent, bills, find “anything”
Thanks to the volunteers who came together to spread the word on gaining job search momentum via staffing agencies. Celebrating 71 years this year as the San Francisco Bay Area’s longest running job search career service, we hope to be of assistance for you! See you at The Job Forum.
