Why A Job Seeker Needs to Have a Current Position with Their Desired Job Title
Why a job seeker needs to have a current position with their desired job title.
Recruiters using LinkedIn to source candidates use a search field called “current”. They have the option to look for anyone who has been in that position in the past but that would bring up far too many options.
If you don’t list your desired job in your present experience, you won’t show up in this kind of search. You don’t need to lie!
- Using the “Career break” option won’t help though you can use it for previous experience.
- Leaving your past job still showing even though you were laid off 3 months ago could be an option though at what point does it become deceptive?
Here’s an alternative
List your current experience as the job title you want
List your current company as the job title or industry area
Include that you are actively looking for roles in the job title you’re looking for plus some of your expertise.
Include relevant highlighted skills
It might look something like this:
Under that current experience, you might have a career break listed if appropriate and/or perhaps some of the volunteer work you’re doing.
Sometimes you have to play around with this a bit to see not only how it looks but also how it “feels”. Do you feel that you are representing yourself authentically? LinkedIn best practices do change so what is a good idea now might not be in 6 months. Keep your profile up to date!
